Cancellation Policy

All cancellations for the ACM General Session or Workshops must be submitted in writing by e-mail to SOGHadmin@societyofobgynhospitalists.org
Cancellations will not be taken by telephone.

  • A $100 Cancellation Fee will be charged prior to August 9, 2019
  • A $200 Cancellation Fee will be charged between August 14 – September 2, 2019
  • No Refund will be given for cancellations made after September 2, 2019

Calling All Posters

Please consider presenting your research at the upcoming SOGH ACM in September 2019, in beautiful La Jolla, California. 

We are looking for posters in the range of original research that support OB/GYN Hospitalist Medicine. Projects could consist of any of the following:

  1. Original clinical or basic science research 
  2. Quality improvement project: Impact study on an intervention or innovative protocol or initiative
  3. Case report

Your poster will be in the presentation hall for attendees to view starting with the opening session. There will be a poster session from 5-6 pm on Tuesday September 24 where authors may stand by their posters to answer questions. The winning poster will be chosen at the end of that session. The author of the winning poster will be given the opportunity to give a 15 minute presentation during the morning general ACM session September 25. The monetary award for the best poster will consist of funding attendance to the 2020 general ACM. 

We welcome posters by residents, midwives or attending physicians. This is a fabulous opportunity to present your research at a national meeting.

Please submit a paragraph summary of your poster via email with “2019 ACM Poster” in subject line to cschneider@veritasmeetingsolutions.com by July 15, 2019.

Call for Applicants - SOGH Future Leaders Award

SOGH is pleased to announce the inaugural Future Leaders Award.

This award covers the cost of registration for the 2019 annual meeting in La Jolla, CA. Current medical students, residents and fellows are eligible for this award. During the conference you will be assigned a mentor who will be managing a portion of the meeting. You will help with the execution of that portion of the meeting. Areas include: Simulation, Sim wars, and workshops. When not engaged in your area of responsibility, you will be able to enjoy the rest of the meeting.

OBGYN Hospitalist Business Seminar: How to Start a New OBGYN Hospitalist Program

This workshop is designed for those interested in starting or improving an OBGYN Hospitalist Program. Although hospitals have different needs and resources, they share a common goal of providing high-quality and safe maternal care.

In this workshop you will learn:

  1. The 8 reasons why most hospitals start a new program
  2. How to establish a timeline, with planning and budgeting
  3. Implementation strategies for a successful and cost-effective hospitalist program, which increases both the safety and quality of maternal care
  4. How to recruit and hire the ideal hospitalist candidates
  5. Whether to do it yourself or hire a management company
  6. How to avoid common pitfalls and errors
  7. How to pay for the new program by establishing an OB ED

You will leave with: An extensive To Do list with a blueprint for starting your program

 

Essential Skills for Safe Operative Vaginal Delivery – Hands-on Course

Emmanuelle Pare, MD

This course will start with a one-hour lecture reviewing principles of safe operative vaginal delivery (forceps and vacuum).

For the hands-on portion, the participants will be divided in 3 groups and will spend 40 minutes practicing the essential skills for safe application and use of vacuum and 80 minutes (2 sessions of 40 minutes) practicing the BASIC essential skills for safe application and use of low and outlet forceps*.

Models used for the hands-on portion are the high-fidelity task trainer “Lucy and her Mum”

Max 8:1 participants to instructor ratio for the hands-on portion.

*This workshop is NOT designed to cover more advanced forceps such as rotation forceps, mid-forceps and Piper forceps.

Laparoscopy for OB Hospitalist

This hands-on course will start with a brief introductory talk with instructional videos. Then participants will have ample opportunity to work at several stations (laparoscopic trainers) to practice surgical skills, specifically tailored to the OB/GYN Hospitalist, with assistance and supervision.

We are offering the popular Multi-skills Workshop again this year.  Practice a variety of skills vital to the OB/GYN Hospitalist in an informal, small group setting. Learn from experts and share tips with your peers in – postpartum hemorrhage management, ultrasound, OB laceration repair, postpartum LARC management and Neonatal resuscitation. Previous participants have appreciated the opportunity to hone their skills in a low stress, highly informative environment. Come join us.

Advanced Fetal Heart Rate Interpretation

Train the Trainer (Sims Course)

Train the trainer is a didactic and hands-on program developed to provide participants with the basic fundamentals of quality improvement initiatives through the creation of safety bundles, checklists, simulation and team building skills.

This program will be divided into three interactive segments. The first session will focus on effective team building strategies. Teamwork principles including leadership, situational awareness, mutual support and effective communication skills will be explored. This presentation will be followed with a team building exercise.

The second portion of this program will assist participants in developing quality improvement projects through the exploration of the major causes of maternal morbidity and mortality, establishing goals for improvement, obtaining buy in, using safety bundles, checklists and simulation to advance patient safety within the participants’ home institutions.

Lastly, this program will come full circle by using low fidelity simulation as a means to test quality improvement proposals. Basic simulations and low fidelity simulation props, tips and tricks will be reviewed. Participants will be provided with a hands-on opportunity to develop and run their own simulations.

Bread & Butter Shoulder Dystocia / Operative Vaginal Delivery (Sims Course)

 Brook Thomson, MD & Don Toatley, MD Get great bang for your buck in this hands-on course using extremely life-like manikins to teach some of the most valuable skills a practitioner of obstetrics can possess. Learn tips and tricks to safely and effectively resolve a shoulder dystocia through correct application of maneuvers and team dynamics.  Understand proper indications and complications of operative vaginal delivery then practice proper techniques for the use of vacuums and forceps.  Whether you are just beginning or have many years under your belt there is something for everyone here.  24

OB Emergencies (Sims Course)

 

In this OB Emergencies Simulation Course, you will rotate through three simulations of critical importane to the OB/GYN Hospitalist in leading the unit.

Sepsis and Maternal Cardiac Arrest
Faculty: Pat Caplinger, MD & Carrie Johnson, MD

Sepsis is the leading cause of death in hospitals and the leading cause of hospital readmission

  • 15% of Maternal deaths in the US are attributable to sepsis
  • Mortality from sepsis increases by 8% every hour that treatment is delayed del
  • Maternal survival after cardiac arrest >50%

Learn to accurately diagnose maternal sepsis and provide initial management and goal directed therapy. Obtain the skills, knowledge and confidence to lead a maternal cardiac arrest for-at least-the initial 10 minutes

Opioid Overdose & Postpartum Hemorrhage
Faculty: Eileen Reardon, MD & Lisbeth Jordan, MD

Opioid abuse in the obstetrical patient is a growing problem. In this simulation course, participants will work to understand the medical risk of opioid abuse to the mother and fetus, recognize and manage opioid overdose in the L&D and OBED setting and identify and treat etiologies of postpartum hemorrhage. The group will also practice effective teamwork skills and strategies during the management of these critical issues.

Intrapartum Management of the Second Twin
Faculty: Ed Ricaurte, MD & Colin Jackson, MD

As the prevalence of vaginal delivery of twins has increased over the years, it is crucial for the Hospitalist to be informed, prepared, and fully equipped to successfully carry out this method of delivery. In this simulation course, participants will review delivery options, discover management options and practice techniques and maneuvers for vaginal delivery of the second twin.
