Essential Skills for Safe Operative Vaginal Delivery – Hands-on Course

Emmanuelle Pare, MD

This course will start with a one-hour lecture reviewing principles of safe operative vaginal delivery (forceps and vacuum).

For the hands-on portion, the participants will be divided in 3 groups and will spend 40 minutes practicing the essential skills for safe application and use of vacuum and 80 minutes (2 sessions of 40 minutes) practicing the BASIC essential skills for safe application and use of low and outlet forceps*.

Models used for the hands-on portion are the high-fidelity task trainer “Lucy and her Mum”

Max 8:1 participants to instructor ratio for the hands-on portion.

*This workshop is NOT designed to cover more advanced forceps such as rotation forceps, mid-forceps and Piper forceps.

Laparoscopy for OB Hospitalist

This hands-on course will start with a brief introductory talk with instructional videos. Then participants will have ample opportunity to work at several stations (laparoscopic trainers) to practice surgical skills, specifically tailored to the OB/GYN Hospitalist, with assistance and supervision.

We are offering the popular Multi-skills Workshop again this year.  Practice a variety of skills vital to the OB/GYN Hospitalist in an informal, small group setting. Learn from experts and share tips with your peers in – postpartum hemorrhage management, ultrasound, OB laceration repair, postpartum LARC management and Neonatal resuscitation. Previous participants have appreciated the opportunity to hone their skills in a low stress, highly informative environment. Come join us.

Advanced Fetal Heart Rate Interpretation

Provide a basic understanding of the physologicy of fetal heart rate changes

Participants will be able to identify specific patterns that predict the presence of fetal metabolic acidemia
Participants will understand how to take an organized approach to interpretation and interventions for abnormal fetal heart tracings

Train the Trainer (Sims Course)

Train the trainer is a didactic and hands-on program developed to provide participants with the basic fundamentals of quality improvement initiatives through the creation of safety bundles, checklists, simulation and team building skills.

This program will be divided into three interactive segments. The first session will focus on effective team building strategies. Teamwork principles including leadership, situational awareness, mutual support and effective communication skills will be explored. This presentation will be followed with a team building exercise.

The second portion of this program will assist participants in developing quality improvement projects through the exploration of the major causes of maternal morbidity and mortality, establishing goals for improvement, obtaining buy in, using safety bundles, checklists and simulation to advance patient safety within the participants’ home institutions.

Lastly, this program will come full circle by using low fidelity simulation as a means to test quality improvement proposals. Basic simulations and low fidelity simulation props, tips and tricks will be reviewed. Participants will be provided with a hands-on opportunity to develop and run their own simulations.

In this OB Emergencies Simulation Course, you will rotate through three simulations of critical importane to the OB/GYN Hospitalist in leading the unit.

Sepsis and Maternal Cardiac Arrest
Faculty: Pat Caplinger, MD & Carrie Johnson, MD

Sepsis is the leading cause of death in hospitals and the leading cause of hospital readmission

• 15% of Maternal deaths in the US are attributable to sepsis
• Mortality from sepsis increases by 8% every hour that treatment is delayed del
• Maternal survival after cardiac arrest >50%

Learn to accurately diagnose maternal sepsis and provide initial management and goal directed therapy. Obtain the skills, knowledge and confidence to lead a maternal cardiac arrest for-at least-the initial 10 minutes

Opioid Overdose & Postpartum Hemorrhage
Faculty: Eileen Reardon, MD & Lisbeth Jordan, MD

Opioid abuse in the obstetrical patient is a growing problem. In this simulation course, participants will work to understand the medical risk of opioid abuse to the mother and fetus, recognize and manage opioid overdose in the L&D and OBED setting and identify and treat etiologies of postpartum hemorrhage. The group will also practice effective teamwork skills and strategies during the management of these critical issues.

Intrapartum Management of the Second Twin
Faculty: Ed Ricaurte, MD & Colin Jackson, MD

As the prevalence of vaginal delivery of twins has increased over the years, it is crucial for the Hospitalist to be informed, prepared, and fully equipped to successfully carry out this method of delivery. In this simulation course, participants will review delivery options, discover management options and practice techniques and maneuvers for vaginal delivery of the second twin.
